Renaissance Lute

The Renaissance lute dates back to the 1400's. This model is based on a lute made by Georg Gerle of Austria c1565.

It is built as a 7 course lute and can be built as either a 6, 7 or 8 course. All courses are double strung except the top string or chantrelle is single. Tuned to G (low to high) Dd Gg Cc ff aa dd g, it can be played much like a guitar.

This particular lute is built in the traditional manner using historically correct methods. Traditional hide glue is used throughout the construction. The finish is hand rubbed oil with a wax finish on the top.

European spruce is used for the top or 'belly' and the internal bracing.

The bowl is constructed of Indian rosewood with holly spacers.

Pearwood bridge with tied on strings.

Spanish cedar neck veneered in ebony with a rosewood stripe. Tradtional hand tied gut is used for the frets.

Peg box is hard maple veneered in ebony with hand turned cocobolo rosewood tuning pegs.

Renaissance lute rose.

Hand made custom fitted case.

Many thanks to David Van Edwards for his excellent tutelage in lute building.
