The 20 string electric-acoustic harp guitar

Built in 2010, this instrument was designed in collaboration with the musician who will be playing it. The string layout has 6 sub bass strings tuned F G A B C D, 6 main strings tuned E A D G B E and 8 super trebles tuned efgabcde.

It is a hollowbody electric with magnetic pickups for each bank of strings plus an acoustic pickup underneath the top. A 2 channel preamp mixes the 2 pickup systems.

Each magnetic pickup has it's own tone and volume plus a single coil split switch to get either a P90 or a humbucker sound. The active preamp has controls for bass, mid, treb and gain for the magentic and acoustic pickups plus knobs to blend the two into a stereo output jack.

If you are interested in commisioning a custom harp guitar please let me know and we can discuss tunings, woods, inlay. etc. Every one is unique and built to custom order. If you would like more information feel free to contact me at Jim@WorlandGuitars.com

The 20 strings are laid out to be easily accessible and easy to tune.

Both necks bolt on for easy adjustment. The rectangular box is a compartment for a 9V battery. The 8 small holes in the middle of the back are adjustments for the preamp so you can adjust the EQ and gain of both channels. The large control cover can be removed to get access to the electronics and other internal components.

The main neck is a typical guitar neck. The bass neck is fretless but it has marks to indicate the fret locations for playing harmonics and a little fretless playing. It's not intended to be a full playing neck but is mainly for open strings to fill in the bass register.

Standard tuning machines are used for the melody and sub bass strings.

One reason we decided on a hollow body design was to provide room for all the electronics. It also adds quite a bit of acoustic tone.

Here's how I made this thing.
